JAMES MACHON REPORTS ON THE SHEFFIELD STOMP The Sheffield Stomp Freestyle competition was run by the Sheffield Sharks Ski Club. The competition was the first of it's kind, and attracted over 50 skiers from all over the UK. The Slopestyle competition showcased some of the best skiing ever seen at the Ski Village and it turned out to be a great event, due to the fantastic atmosphere, great weather and BBQ which was put on in the afternoon. The entry fee for the competition was only £5 for the day, with amazing sponsors behind it! With cash prizes for the unsponsored, as well as sponsored riders. Talking to Richard Summerhaze, the main event organiser, his aim for the competition was to give the younger, unsponsored athletes a chance to win, by separating the sponsored and unsponsored riders, to raise their profiles within the sport. It turned out to be one of the best competitions in the UK and it certainly said something about the amount of talent Sheffield has to offer! Overall a great event and I would recommend it to anyone. |

MIKE WAKEFIELD INJURED Mike Wakefield, Pro rider for LINE and Oakley, has been injured while training in France. Ironically this didn't happen when he was 20 foot in the air over a halfpipe but on a small windlip jump just off the piste when snow fell away as he hit it, revealing rock and flipping him over. He is in hospital in Grenoble having hurt his vertebrae and is unlikely to ski this season. This is hugely disappointing for Mike as he is one of the best freestyle skiers in the UK and was just coming back from a frustrating season last year when he broke his collar bone twice. Having been crowned British Quarterpipe Champion 2006 at the Metro Ski and Snowboard Show in October Mike was looking forward to competing this season in all the key competitions including the World Cup Halfpipe, Brits and Orage European Open. We wish Mike a fast recovery. We will provide more news here as we get it. |

REVOLUTIONZ OPENS IN GREENWICH There's a strong argument that London is underserved by specialist, modern ski and snowboard dealers. The good news is that the new Revolutionz store just opened in Greenwich (14a King William Walk) and sister store to Revolutionz in Norwich (and a new Revolutionz opening soon in Newquay) is doing its bit to regress the balance. Just around the corner from the famous market, high street and Cutty Sark, this store is stacked with top ski and snowboard brands and managed by the owner Jason so you are guaranteed personal service. Greenwich is also a lively, funky place to visit. Go check it out! Click here for full contact details and photos from the opening night! |

CAN’T GET ENOUGH OF IT!... According to sales figures just in from the SIA in North America, freestyle skis and clothing are the hottest growth area in snowsports right now. Freestyle twintip skis were the fastest growing equipment category this season in the USA, notching a near 70% increase in pairs sold and 65% increase in the amount people are spending on skis. Freestyle inspired clothing is also selling well - no need to wear snowboard brands anymore! It’s like Mike Nick, one of LINE’s first pro skiers and founder of Siver Cartel clothing, recently commented: “Skiing is no longer a sport for the older generation and with expanded product offerings from both hard and soft goods our sport is attracting new participants every year.” Even snowboard shops are getting excited about the growth in freestyle skiing, take Jared Derosier for example, snowboard buyer/manager at a shop in New Hampshire, USA: “Twintip skis sold well because they are a great all-mountain ski and so easy to use for all levels and ages of participants.” For fat skis and twin tips there is only one brand of choice… ride LINE… we’ve got your back.Click here. |

LINE RIDERS DOMINATE AT LAAX! Congratulations to the LINE UK Pro skiers who were able to compete at Laax in the Orange Brits, doing a great job representing main sponsors LINE, Nike ACG and North Face. Given injury, strange judging etc the results were excellent. (Commisserations to Mike Wakefield and Tom Last who couldn't make it out this time... they'll be back next year!)
- LINE UK Pro skier Andy Bennett took the BRITS Slopestyle title again (with a Switch 540 and Corked 720 over the kickers and easily negotiated Rollercoaster rail) and came 2nd in the Big Air (Switch, Corked 720) and 2nd in the Halfpipe.
- Team mate 14 year old Murray Buchan was hot on his heels coming 3rd overall in both the Big Air (clean Switch 900) and Slopestyle (Switch 5, Corked 720 and another smooth Wall Ride), a fantastic result for such a young rider competing against much older, more experience skiers! He also qualified in 4th place for the Halfpipe finals (with a 9 in his run) but was unable to compete due to a brake problem.
- Paddy Graham dominated his age group early in the week and then pulled it out of the bag to come 1st overall in the Halfpipe (having already taken a cheeky ride through the halfpipe just before the Snowboarding Halfpipe competition kicked off, going huge and drawing appreciation from skiers and snowboarders alike). Paddy also won the one-hit biggest air with a 22ft high straight air! Shabba!!
- LINE staffer Rick Hutchings was out there to support/coach but couldn't resist having a go himself and won the Masters Halfpipe. Congratulations also to Richard Martin (3rd in the Halfpipe), James Woods and Joe Taylor (Salomon rider who won the Big Air).
Well done to everyone for making it such a great week, especially all at Soul Sports, the guys behind the Orange Brits. Photos and a full report coming soon. Meantime to read the results in full see: www.aimseries.com |

DON'T MISS SOME GREAT EVENTS HAPPENING AROUND THE UK... CLICK ON "EVENTS" IN THE MENU BAR FOR FULL INFORMATION.
KSM vs REFRIGERATOR Many thanks to the KSM, Ellis Brigham and Xscape crews for a great event at the Snozone, Milton Keynes on Saturday 24 September. There were at least 60 riders... with lots of young freestylers and girls throwing it down on the rails, boxes and wall ride on the slopestyle course and the kicker with 7m gap! The standard of riding, especially from the UK's top riders who were out in force, was very impressive... freestyle skiing is going huge in the UK... believe it!
Here's the write-up from the KSM guys:
"Sixty five of the most talented UK freestyle skiers showed what they were made of at Xscape Milton Keynes on Saturday 24 September. Six rails, two jumps and a daunting wall ride greeted riders at the start of the night, with the crowning feature a 7m gap kicker. It almost never came to be after 10 hours of digging it was looking too big but Andy Bennett hit it at full speed and tested it out. Ted Foster, Jamie Cameron and Darryl Ball all threw done some amazing stuff but it was Mark Watson of Salomon who stomped a huge Cork7 Toxic which was enough to earn him the best male trick award.
Riders were spoiled with rails to choose from and the likes of Murray Buchan, Rob Taylor and Shelly Jones impressed by doing every trick in the book. Shelly was awarded best female trick for her smooth switch 270 to rail.
The huge wall ride at the bottom of the course was made to look easy by Andy Colin with his switch hits and 180 disasters. His solid kicker and rail riding won him Best Sponsored skier award.
The Ellis Brigham Refrigerator has always been about showing off the best young and undiscovered talent and Charlie Smith and Harry Hancock skied with all the style of Pros in the making. However it was Max Alden, a Milton Keynes local, who produced top drawer skiing all night and won the Best Unsponsored skier award and received a year's sponsorship from Scott USA for his efforts.
After an hour's practice and two hours of qualifying the judges had the tough job of narrowing the field down to 12 riders, two for each category. After three hours of high quality skiing Andy Bennett's KSM team came into battle against the Ellis Brigham Refrigerator Open squad captained by Ted Foster. The standard shown by the finalists was incredible and despite the Refrigerator Open taking a 2-0 lead the seven skiers of team KSM went on to win 4-3.
Before the presentation was a prize-heavy raffle with all the proceeds being added to the entry fees to be donated to Sean Rose and the British Paralympic ski team. Tom Mottershead being awarded for the Best stack and Amy Rudman won Best Unsponsored female for her solid riding. But it was Andy Topping and Pikey who shared the traditional "Nick Southwell Award" given out for maximum effort because no one could deny their skiing was sick all night.
By the end of the night we had witnessed the UK's best Freestyle Ski event of 2005 and left with great memories.
Results:
- Best Unsponsored Male - Max Alden
- Best Unsponsored Female - Any Rudman
- Best Youth - Charlie Smith
- Best Junior - Harry Hancock
- Best Sponsored Skier - Andy Colin
- Best Male Trick - Mark Watson
- Best Female Trick - Shelly Jones
- Best Stack - Tom Mottershead
- Nick Southwell Award - Andy Topping / Pikey
- Team Award - KSM Showdown / Andy Bennett
Thanks to all the sponsors: LINE, Scott USA, Xscape, Ellis Brigham, Natives.co.uk, K2, Head, Nordica, Salomon, Smith, Oakley, Faction, Spy Optic, Mission6, DaKine, Dynastar, Lange, Giro, Dark Summer and Fall Line. Huge thank you to everyone who helped make this event work: Andy Bennett, Paddy Graham, Eddie Thelwell, Mark Watson, Ted Foster, all @ Xscape MK, Ali, Mark Woods, Steve Wells and anyone else who helped."
ORANGE AIM SERIES, RESULTS After a great comp in Castleford with a great course/slope, dominated by Mike Wakefield who took the British Indoor Slopestyle Championship title (with a run comprising a switch on, 270 out on the top rail, blind side switch up on the A-Frame, a 180 on 180 off on the box rail and a 180 over the spine!), the AIM Series moved to Rossendale on 18 September for the Big Air and British Skiercross Championship leg of the Orange AIM Series...
What did young Murray Buchan from the LINE team go and do on his Chronic Minis? Aged 13 years?! He only went and beat Andy Bennett with a Switch 900! Andy reckons Murray is the first to do one a dry slope. (Well, he's never done one!) Andy came second with a Rodeo and a Switch 7 and James Woods came 3rd. Andy also came 2nd in the Skiercross too just behind Pat Sharples. Well done to Murray... an awesome result!
Here's what he had to say: "Great day today. Weather didn't effect anyone much. It was grey and a bit drizzly but all ok. Started off with the Skiercross then went into the Big Air. Skiercross has to be the closest one yet. It was so tight. After that we went over to the Big Air. The jump wasn't running so well but every one coped. In practise I managed to land one Switch Nine after various attempts and Switch Sevens all the time. We went into the qualifing and my run consisted of a Seven Safety and a bail
Switch Nine. I managed to qualify for the finals in second position. In the finals my run was a Seven Mute and I manged to land my Switch Nine. It was tight but I came out victorious!" (You can see Murray and fellow LINE rider Paddy Graham in the new Rad "Groms in the Rockies" series, Channel Five in early December.)
So... rumour has it this was probably the most fun AIM series so far and at least 60 skiers turned up... against 30 odd Snowboarders! Rock on!
THE FARMER'S JAM AT NORWICH This event took place 10-11 September and was a lot of fun... Andy Bennett and Tom Last made it from the LINE team to try out the new snowflex surface... over £1.3m has been invested in the Norfolk Ski Club's slope over the Summer... go check it out... and put the annual "Farmer's Jam" in your diary for next year... it's annual right, so we want to see you there showing what skiers can do with twin tips!
WHO'S THE DADDY? It was a great event, huge turn out, loads of fun and LINE rider Mike Wakefield walked off with all the prizes! Well done to everyone involved... more please Tamworth!
