BASKETBALL HOLIDAYS & SUMMER CAMPS WITH HOOPERS, FOOTBALL (SOCCER) HOLIDAYS & SUMMER CAMPS WITH KICKERS AND INLINE ROLLER HOCKEY HOLIDAYS & SUMMER CAMPS WITH RHUK
ABOUT BARCELONA, SPAIN (EUROPE) IN JULY AND AUGUST 2008

SUMMER IN BARCELONA - LOCATION, ACCOMMODATION & TRAVEL INFORMATION (SPAIN)

WHY BARCELONA, SPAIN?

Barcelona Beach 300We have been running Summer Camps in Barcelona since 2006. We love it there!

Barcelona has a huge amount to offer - from great facilities to multi-activities, good beaches, blue skies and sunshine. The city loves basketball, football and roller hockey; as well as the famous FC Barcelona football team, the Nou Camp football stadium is also home to the elite FC Barcelona Basketball team and a roller hockey club too.

Tourparty School Outdoor Court 300Barcelona is in a great position on the northeastern coast of Spain and the shores of the Mediterranean, about 2 hours drive from the French border. It is a very cosmopolitan European city, the second largest in Spain in both size and population and the capital of Catalunya (both Spanish and Catalan are widely spoken interchangeably).

Most of this modern city was planned with a grid-like layout but there is also a historic Gothic center with a maze of narrow streets. There are some fantastic buildings and parks with the work of the eccentric Gaudi (including the Parc Güell and the still unfinished Sagrada Família Cathedral) standing out. The architecture, significant collections of art by Picasso and Miró, museums and galleries and new developments like the refurbished beaches and shopping areas around Port Olympic all make for a sizling, vibrant, dynamic city and a perfect place to visit for a Summer Camp!

Barcelona is an easy city to travel around too, we can quickly get from our training areas to the beaches and to the shops, to activities like ten pin bowling and to the main tourist sites, to the nearby water theme park and to our accommodation.

Tourparty Nou Camp 300Barcelona is easy to reach from anywhere in the world with:

  • flights direct to Barcelona International Airport and also some low-cost carriers (such as Ryanair) flying in to the airports in Girona, nearly 100km to the north, or Reus, around the same distance to the south, (there are coach and rail services connecting them to Barcelona),
  • rail services from across Europe, and
  • excellent road links.

(Please see below for more detailed information on travel to Barcelona.)

Our Barcelona sports facilities and hostel accommodation secure, comfortable and well located, and there is no question... our friends in Barcelona are fantastic hosts, welcoming us to their city every year. How many more reasons do we need to head to Spain in July 2008?!

WON'T IT BE TOO HOT IN JULY & AUGUST?

Tourparty Nou Camp Terraces 300July and August are the hottest months of the year but we know from the successful Camps held in previous years that the heat is bearable and we have refined our programme to avoid the midday sun.

We use the mornings for rest and relaxation, perhaps visiting the beach or going shopping, and then we use the afternoons and evenings to train and play basketball. With the afternoon breeze around the court and the option of using the indoor air conditoned court there should be no problems with the heat. There is nothing better than playing pickup basketball, football or hockey at our sports centre at night, with its fantastic view of Barcelona!

Tourparty School Sports Centre 250WHERE DO WE TRAIN AND PLAY?

We have a range of high quality courts, rinks, astro-turf pitches and other training facilities, indoors and outdoors, available to us over the week of the Camp.

Our main training venue and base for the week is a School called “Escola Pia Sarria” in Barcelona.

The School has a website at: www.escolapia.net/sarria.

Tourparty School Covered Court 300As well as the outdoor stone tile training court at the School (with its fantastic view of Barcelona) there are extensive hard play training areas, a large outdoor court covered by a roof, a brand new astroturf pitch (set in the School's grounds overlooking Barcelona - the old dirt pitch was converted at considerable cost into a brilliant new facility with an astroturf system over the Summer 2007), a Leisure Centre with an indoor court and swimming pool and a Climbing wall.

There are modern, clean changing rooms with showers and other facilities in the Leisure Centre and near the other facilities.

The Leisure Centre and Climbing wall are next to each other, only a few minutes walk from the courts. The Leisure Centre has an excellent restaurant attached to it, where we eat lunch and dinner most days.

SUMMER CAMP ACCOMMODATION & FOOD

Tourparty Theme Pose 300The accommodation is brilliant... we normally stay in the Hotel Residencia Sarria (which is a University Halls of Residence just 5 mins bus ride from our sports facilities) or the Youth Hostel Alberg Pere Tarres (a modern youth hostel in a safe financial and shipping district). Both are well located, offering secure, safe, comfortable accommodation:

  • The Hotel Residencia Sarria has en-suite twin bedrooms, a free internet room, a movie theatre, vending machines, pool tables, laundry facilities, free use of the University Sports Centre next door, a buffet breakfast and a rooftop swimming pool.
  • The Alberg Pere Tarres has en-suite dormitory and twin bedrooms, free internet access, vending machines, table tennis, laundry facilities, buffet breakfast and is immediately opposite an excellent shopping centre and close to the Nou Camp stadium.

WHAT IS THE FOOD LIKE?

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included in the residential package (lunch is included in the non-residential day package) and the food is very very good!

Tourparty Meal Lads 250An all-you-can eat buffet breakfast is provided at the Hotel Residence with a choice of cooked foods, cereals, fruit, breads, toast, cakes, juices and coffee.

There is plenty of choice for lunch and dinner which are both served in the excellent Leisure Centre restaurant close to the court.

For lunch and dinner there is always a wide range of good quality, tasty options with salad and pasta starters available, followed by a main course of meat or fish and chips and vegetables, followed by desert.

We are able to meet all dietary requirements. Prior to the Summer Camp we send out a Camp information pack and various forms requesting details of dietary needs etc. So if you have particular food needs (such as vegetarian, vegan, kosher or halaal) we will be able to arrange this for you.

HOW DO YOU PLAN TO TRAVEL TO BARCELONA?

Tourparty Ice Cream 200Wherever you are in the world getting to Barcelona is relatively easy as there is a major international airport close to the city and there are great road and rail connections to Barcelona from all over Europe.

For this reason transport to and from the Camp / Barcelona is the only thing not included in the packages. This is to give you maximum flexibility, wherever you are coming from - whether the UK, Europe, USA or somewhere else in the world.

You decide how you want to get to the Camp / Barcelona from your home, making your own arrangements to arrive by car, train or plane.

Those arriving by car or train will need to make their own way to the accommodation by 5pm on the Sunday.

For those arriving by plane at Barcelona International Airport we will provide a free "meet & greet" and bus transfer service between Barcelona airport and the rink from 9am - 5pm on Sunday (other arrival times may be possible by special arrangement). A member of the Camp staff will be waiting in the airport to meet those arriving by plane and to take them by private bus to the rink.

Tourparty Lads Relaxing 250At the end of their stay with us we will ensure all participants traveling by plane are at the airport in good time for their flights (ideally 9am - 5pm) and help them check-in and enter the departure zone. (This service is included in the delegate package but special arrangements or flight delays will cost extra.)

All major airlines fly to Barcelona International airport. There are also a large number of budget airlines and charter airlines offering great prices. It is definitely worth shopping around on the internet, through tour operators (for flights only) and through local travel agents.

Younger unaccompanied passengers can normally travel on national airlines from all countries around the world to Barcelona without difficulty, to be met by our staff for the free "meet and greet" service.

We cannot offer a "meet and greet" service from the other airports at Girona, nearly 100km to the north, or Reus, around the same distance to the south, but there are coach and rail services connecting them to Barcelona.
